This study examines the impact of the Japanese occupation on East Timorese society during World War II by analyzing its political, social, and economic consequences. A qualitative historical research approach was employed using documentary analysis of archival records, historical documents, scholarly literature, and previous studies. The findings reveal that the Japanese occupation (1942–1945) significantly disrupted Portuguese colonial administration and caused widespread socioeconomic deterioration through forced labor, food shortages, population displacement, infrastructure destruction, and military violence. Despite these hardships, East Timorese communities actively supported Allied guerrilla operations, demonstrating resilience and strengthening collective identity. Following Japan's surrender, Portugal restored colonial administration; however, wartime experiences had fundamentally transformed political awareness and social structures, contributing to the emergence of nationalist consciousness. This study concludes that the Japanese occupation should be understood not only as a military episode but also as a transformative historical process that profoundly influenced the long-term development of East Timorese society.
