Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutrition problem that still draws attention in Indonesia because it affects the growth and development of toddlers. Factors suspected to be related to the occurrence of stunting include exclusive breastfeeding and a history of infectious diseases. This study aimed to find out the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and a history of infectious diseases with the incidence of stunting in toddlers in Oesapa Subdistrict, Kupang City. The study used a case-control design and was conducted from February to May 2026. The sample consisted of 84 respondents, with 42 in the case group and 42 in the control group. Data was collected using questionnaires and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The study results show that most respondents received exclusive breastfeeding (58.3%) and did not have a history of infectious diseases (53.6%). Bivariate analysis results show there is a relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and the occurrence of stunting (p-value=0.003) and there is a relationship between a history of infectious diseases and the occurrence of stunting (p-value=0.002). Toddlers who did not receive exclusive breastfeeding have a 4.71 times higher risk of experiencing stunting compared to toddlers who did receive exclusive breastfeeding (OR=4.71; 95% CI=1.85–11.97), while toddlers with a history of infectious diseases have a 4.50 times higher risk of experiencing stunting compared to toddlers without a history of infectious diseases (OR=4.50; 95% CI=1.82–11.10). This study concludes that exclusive breastfeeding and a history of infectious diseases are related to the occurrence of stunting in toddlers
